Chapter 6

Nick paced the bedroom Christy had placed Zoe in that night as she tried to pry the strange jewellery box open.

“You’ll wear a hole in the floor,” she said without looking up.

He didn’t understand why she seemed so fascinated with the damn thing. There didn’t seem to be anything special about it, and it seemed unfair to steal it from that poor old woman. Glancing at the window, he saw the sky was now covered in a blanket of heavy darkness, and the first slivers of moonlight had appeared as the full moon rose.

Nick stopped pacing and crossed his arms. “I’m about to see my dead mother again after twenty years. Can you blame me for being a bit nervous?” He felt both excited and terrified by the prospect.

Zoe rose and wrapped her arms around him. “You’ll be fine.”

“Maybe.” He sighed, resting his head on her shoulder. It felt good to finally hold her again. He had come so close to having that taken away a couple of days earlier when the Circle had sentenced her to death by burning. “I don’t want to lose you ever again.” He pulled her in for a passionate kiss.

“Sorry to interrupt,” Christy said loudly from the doorway.

They pulled away from each other, Zoe flushing with embarrassment.

“Ready to begin?” Christy asked. “The moon is coming up. Now is the perfect time to cast a spell and summon Sonia from the other side.”

Nick nodded and took Zoe’s hand. “Let’s go.”

They followed Christy downstairs to a small workroom that had been set up with an altar. Books lined the walls, and a spell circle sat on the floor, surrounded by candles.

Christy lit the candles and muttered words Nick and Zoe couldn’t understand.

Nick crossed his arms nervously. For years he’d wanted nothing more than to speak to Sonia one last time, but now he felt scared. What would she look like? Would she be as he remembered her? Would she even want to talk to him? He’d blamed himself for her death for years, and now those emotions started to creep back.

You’ll be fine. Zoe squeezed his hand and gave him a reassuring smile.

He smiled. Thanks for doing this with me.

We’re partners, remember? More than that.

Are we? He arched an eyebrow. Despite telling her he loved her before Sabine had cast the undoing spell, he still had no idea where things stood between them. They hadn’t even had a real date yet, let alone any kind of relationship that went beyond friendship.

You know we are.

They waited as the candles flickered.

Nick wondered what was supposed to happen. There was nothing and no sign of Sonia – neither physically nor magically.

“Are you sure it worked?” he asked Christy. He’d expected to see something, or to feel a cool breeze as he had when Carmel had tried summoning a spirit for them a few months earlier, before she’d been possessed by Zoe’s stalker entity. Yet the room around him felt the same. No coldness. He tried to remember what Sonia looked like, what she smelt like, how she laughed.
